My beautiful, youngest (13 years old) - though he’s now 6ft 2in tall. Since moving school, or having to move school because the autistic specific school that takes all autistic children and had had him since he was 3, couldn’t take care of him any more. He was supposed to be there till he was 19. The “route” to his new school was a long and painful one, uncertainty abounded in our house, he cannot speak so we cannot explain to him what’s going on.
He’s been in his new school for 12 months now, and has achieved outstanding progress in ALL areas of his school work, they estimate that in the last 12 months, he’s progressed 3-5 years, but we didn’t need them to tell us that, we can see it ourselves. My son’s case is cut and dry, there is no doubt or ambiguity over what his needs are, that’s not always the case with Autism. He also has severe learning difficulties and sensory processing issues. Also, his statement of educational need is TIGHT, it has been looked at and added to by so many professionals who have dealt with him and we kept at it until it was right.
For the first time in his life, he is being educated, not baby sat. AND, the most important aspect of all this is, he is so much more happier than he was before. You don’t need to be able to speak for your parents to know if you’re happy or not and my boy, right now, is happy.
